PHINZ is excited to present the third webinar in our 2025 series – Designers Webinars: How to Build A Passive House and Builders Social Webinars: Everything Passive House.
Webinar 3 – Designers Webinar
Topic: Alternative Wall Systems
When: 14 March 2025, 12:30pm – 2:00pm (includes a Q&A session)
Cost (members): $15.00
Cost (non-members): $30.00
This talk will be relevant to Architects, Architectural Designers, Structural Engineers, Contractors, Passive House Designers and Passive House enthusiasts.
Join PHINZ for an in-depth webinar exploring innovative wall systems presented by Guy Shaw.
This session is tailored for architects and designers working on Passive House projects, as well as those committed to creating high-performance buildings. We’ll move beyond conventional construction, showcasing alternative solutions from three suppliers. Gain critical knowledge into the requirements essential for achieving good thermal performance in walls. Discover how these products meet and exceed those standards.
We’ll engage in one-on-one sessions with each supplier to delve into the specific advantages of their systems for Passive House certification and high-performance building. A comprehensive Q&A session will follow.
Hosted and moderated by:
- Guy Shaw, PHINZ Board member and Director of Energy Architecture
Speakers:
- Stefan Warnaar, StrawSIPS
Stefan studied Chemical Engineering and spent a few years working in other fields before discovering the world of earth building after staying in earth houses while travelling through Central Asia. After working on rammed earth, hemp and straw houses it became clear that straw has huge potential to change the way we build in New Zealand and we have an abundance of straw available. Most of the rest of the world had shifted towards prefabrication of straw panels, and Stefan saw that as the only way forward and into the mainstream building audience in NZ. Since the start of COVID Stefan has been developing the panels and manufacturing process and the first houses began in 2024, with half a dozen more on the way for 2025.
- James Clarke, NZSIPS
One of the founders of NZSIP with over 22 years in the construction industry. Project Manager in Commercial and residential builds. Former owner of a construction company under which we built Passive House.
- Michael Goedert, Atamai Structures
20 years experience as a carpenter, overseas and NZ
- Started apprenticeship in 2004
- Came to NZ fully qualified as German Master Carpenter in 2013
- Worked since then in the passive house / high performance industry in NZ
- Started for Atamai in 2020
Experience in:
- Passive house / high performance from residential to office buildings
- High performance retrofits
- Engineered timber projects to high performance / passive house level

StrawSIP panels are an innovative, high performance straw-timber system that allows for affordable and efficient construction of warm, dry and healthy homes.

Our modular system allows anyone to design and build a home with natural materials in an easy and cost effective
way that doesn’t compromise on any of the benefits of a typical straw home such as natural earth materials, high energy efficiency, low VOC and low carbon construction.

NZSIP was formed in 2016 by a group of Kiwis who wanted to see premium structural insulated panels create smart building systems
manufactured in New Zealand, rather than imported from the United States, as they typically were then. We are one hundred per cent New Zealand owned, and fully manufacture all our panels in Cromwell, Central Otago. Our company holds current BRANZ certification for our NZSIP Smart Panel Building System, giving customers confidence in knowing our product has been through a rigorous test regime for New Zealand conditions, including a high-level documentation review and a factory audit.
Each panel is made to the architectural and engineering specifications by our small team of skilled employees. NZSIP provides to market a complete building system that includes structural insulated panel walls, roofs, and floors. The panels have a rigid, high-density polyurethane (PUR) core that makes them dense, strong, and capable of achieving high R-values. Strong, airtight and super-insulated to maintain a stable interior environment, our New Zealand-made polyurethane structural insulated panels are recognised as one of the easiest ways to build next-generation, energy-efficient buildings. NZSIP products and systems have featured in building projects for research and development, light industrial, commercial, residential and tourism sectors.
