Kāinga Ora

Kāinga Ora is responsible for delivering the government’s priorities for housing and urban development in New Zealand. We have two key roles, being a world-class public housing landlord and delivering urban development projects of all sizes.

Our organisation is committed to ensuring that all New Zealanders have access to warm, dry and healthy homes. We manage over 66,000 residential properties, and provide tenancy services to more than 200,000 New Zealanders. As well as maintaining and developing our public housing stock, Kāinga Ora also provides a range of financial and home ownership products designed to support first home buyers into the market.

In our role as the government’s urban development agency, we are working to deliver new, quality urban developments that connect homes with jobs, transport, open spaces and facilities.

Sustainability and innovation are key focus areas for our organisation, and through our build programme we are driving the start of a national response to climate change mitigation in the built environment. Some of our key sustainability initiatives include six Passive House pilot projects, an offsite manufacturing programme, ambitious waste minimisation targets and decentralised energy trials.
